Sunset Beach - Day 3
August 29, 2023
The highlight of today was a kayak tour of the Elkhorn Slough with Monterey Bay Kayak. We had chosen to go in the afternoon since it had been overcast Monday morning. Lucky us, we were the only two people who had signed up for the afternoon tour so we had a guide to ourselves.
During our two-and-a-half-hour tour with Alexis, we saw many sea lions, mostly hanging out by the shore, and sea otters, eating, grooming, and frolicking in the water. There were also egrets, curlews, seagulls, and pelicans. High tide occurred while we were in the water and it was interesting to see just how far the water had receded in the next hour. That meant that we could see a smattering of anemones, mussels, and barnacles clinging to the side of bridge pylons.
It's hard to see any otters in this picture. Since it is a marine sanctuary, and because it is just a good idea in general, we needed to stay pretty far from the animals and birds.
