Day 1, Who Knew California Got March Rain?
The weather has been rainy, windy, and cold. Not the weather we were expecting when we planned this trip six months ago. But, with a break in the rain on our leaving day, we decided to venture out. The forecast looked like we could make most of the trip in no or very light rain, with gentle winds, and, thank God, it was right.
This is our spring wildflower trip. Given the rain, we expect a profusion of flowers. So are, we have seen large swaths of yellow mustard, fields of purple lupine, and a smattering of orange poppies and flowering fruit trees. We drove through acres and acres of vineyards, fruit trees, and cattle farms. We are definitely in farm county.
The only disappointment with traveling in California is the paucity of rest stops. We ended up at a Chevron truck stop to eat our packed lunch.
Tonight, we are at a Harvest Host RandCher vineyards. It is just that, a vineyard. Having gotten the code to the gate lock, we let ourselves in and seem to be the only people around. Just after we pulled in, it began raining. We’ll keep an eye on the roads for flooding and hope the rest of the trip goes as smoothly as today’s did. Maybe tonight's double rainbow is a sign of good things to come.
