Day 2, July 12, 2022
We left Testa without having a chance to try their wine. But, since Harvest Host suggests a $20 purchase, we left a $20 “donation.” The stay was in their lower parking lot just off 101 and across the street from a business that has large trucks in and out at strange times of the night. That meant it wasn’t as restful a night as we would have liked. I probably wouldn’t stay there again.
We needed to stop by Northern Sky RV Repair & Service. Luckily, it was about 2 miles from Testa. The guy there crawled under the trailer to look at the brakes and told us we hadn’t damaged them. We bought a break-away cable from him and were on our way.
It was a long drive…we stopped at Trinidad Northbound Rest Stop. It was beautiful with lots of trees and picnic tables nestled underneath them. We did a short ¼-mile walk and got to talking to the rest-stop custodian. He told us we should stretch our legs on a short hike up the road.
We headed to the Redwoods National Park and the Lady Bird Johnson trail but found that RVs and trailers were not allowed since there was no turnaround. But luckily, the road for us ended at a different trailhead, Redwood Creek Trail.
The trail has a variety of trees: red alders, Douglas-Fir, and maple, with a few clusters of old-growth redwood. There’s also a grove of moss-covered spruce. We hiked nearly two miles in before coming to a river crossing. During the summer, there are two bridges which go across the river. They are separated by a gravel bar. Once you cross the second bridge, you can hike into an area for dispersed camping. Since we weren’t interested in that, we turned around. It was a quiet, beautiful trail.
We got off 101 and missed Crescent City by taking the short Newton Drury Scenic Byway. Again, lots of tall trees. There are a lot of trails off the byway but really nowhere to park the trailer.
We arrived at Alfred Loeb campground and found the space I had reserved was a tight fit. The ranger offered to move us to a different, larger spot which is beautiful, large, and closer to Ardith and Jim. A win-win-win. We went for a walk along the Chetco River from their campsite. Jim had smoked brisket for dinner - it was delicious.
