Day 5, a Sweet Start

We started our touring day by going to Pacific Sourdough Bakery. It's a bit off the main road but that doesn't dissuade folks from lining up. While they do have sourdough breads, the name belies the sweet treats within. It was hard to make choices and we ended up with more than we should eat while it is still at its best. What we have sampled is delicious. It's always great finding places providing an excellent product in a small town and being able to make a go at it.
We took a walk on the beach to burn off a few of the calories. We felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. The campground is less than half occupied. Not surprising given the chilly days and chance of rain. Still, every site near the water is occupied.
We set out to explore the area. Denis wanted to check out a possible future bike route. Our route took us past the Newport harbor which is the largest commercial port in Oregon.
As we wandered, we drove through Toledo, settled by a European-American who had lived in Toledo, Ohio and was homesick. Their website says there are many Victorian homes but we weren't able to find any. What we did find was the Georgia-Pacific paper manufacturer. It is hard to miss with the trucks loaded with trees
and the smoke-stacks spewing foul-smelling smoke.
I'd read about the Oregon Coast Aquarium. One of its features is the tunnels. There are three different marine environments you can walk through.
We enjoyed talking to the volunteers to learn about some of the fish and birds in the aviary. Of course, a favorite at many aquariums are these guys
Back at the campsite we took advantage of the dry, though chilly weather to eat dinner outside.
