Day 3

One thing every traveler knows is that it is important to stay flexible. Hopefully, that'll lead to delightful unexpected discoveries. Sometimes, it results in a change of plans and learning things you wish you didn't need to. Today was both.

The day started out as usual. As we drove up Hwy 5 in Oregon, we were interested to see people pruning trees and racking up piles of debris before setting controlled fires. We'd seen piles in Yellowstone that would be burned during the winter when there was less chance of the fires spreading.

We found gas $.40/gal cheaper at a casino on Hwy. 5. What we saved in cash, we paid in 30 minutes of added travel time. As anyone who has filled up at Costco lately can attest, the lines are long for cheaper gas and there's no escape once you get in a line.

Our big surprise for the day turned out to be a shattered front window of our RV. We'd read that people with our model had issues. The window is curved glass that has a habit of failing, no rocks required. Luckily, it stayed in place and we were able to get to Beachside State Park.
By now, it was 4:00 and the RV manufacturer customer service was closed. But, we still couldn't take a chance the window would decide to shatter in the middle of the night. First, that's where the bed is and also, rain is expected during the night. So, we parked the RV and got to learn about small town hardware and auto parts stores, find out where an auto glass store is, and finally, visit a collision shop, about 20 miles down the road. Tomorrow, they will be able to wrap the window with an adhesive that should keep it from falling apart but we still needed to solve the more immediate problem. We got to another Ace Hardware to get plastic sheeting and blue tape before they closed. Hopefully, it'll hold the window for the night.

The silver lining was coming across Rogue Brewery. West Coast beer fans will know them from their Dead Guy Ale.
Two six-packs later, we reminded ourselves the day could have turned out much worse.

  1. Sorry to hear about your shattered widow, that's something I worry about with our rig also. I'm loving following along on your latest adventure.
