Day 73, The Road Less Traveled

When we were living in Maryland and traveling back to Buffalo on a regular basis, we bought the county road maps for counties we would likely travel through in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York states. Denis always liked exploring different country roads and, sometimes, even unpaved ones.

It hasn't been too much different on this trip. While he has done a lot of highway driving, he will spend time plotting an RV safe route that is possibly a bit longer, but also a bit more interesting than the ribbons of highways. Today, was one of those days. Google gave us three different route choices to get from Capitol Reef to Bryce Canyon. One, Hwy 12, is said to be one of those epic scenic drives, but unsuitable for an RV. One was a route that involved highway. Another, Utah 22, was a bit out of the way and went through small towns and ranch lands, some of it designated "Open Range" where cattle can roam freely, even across the road.

While driving, we thought about what it must have taken to not only have roads in some of these areas, but also electricity, phone, and mail service!

Have you ever wondered what those circles you see on land while flying are? They are center-pivot irrigation circles. Here's what one looks like from the highway.

Bryce Canyon is the land of hoodoos, tall, skinny towers of rock. In the Paiute Native Americans oral tradition, hoodoos are ancient "Legend People" turned to stone by Coyote as a punishment for bad deeds.

Colleen said that with Covid, destination elopements have gained popularity. We wondered if that was what was happening here.

Before we set out on our hike, we checked the weather. It said no rain for at least 120 minutes but the sky was telling us something different so we packed our rain jackets into the backpack. We not only got rain, but also hail, but only for a few minutes - and the scenery was so spectacular, we hardly minded. And, if this tree can survive the weather, we can hardly complain.

Denis took some fabulous panorama photos today. If you are on Facebook, look for him at dmlynch.
