Day 59, I Can See for Miles and Miles and Miles and Miles
Continuing our drive west, we are now in the Central Time Zone and the green rolling hills of Kentucky have been replaced with flat Midwest vistas.
Tonight, we are in an Army Corps of Engineers campground in Illinois. With our National Park senior discount pass, the cost of one night's stay with full hookups is $13.
Gun Creek Campground is part of the Rend Lake Conservancy. Rend Lake is a 13 mile long, 3 mile wide reservoir. It offers lots of water activities, including water trails. We opted for riding on part of the 21 miles of bike trails which, unfortunately, are not connected.
It was threatening a thunderstorm so when we heard thunder at 5 miles, we retraced our route back to the campground not wanting a repeat of being stuck in the thunderstorm in Ohiopyle while we were hiking. We did see some pretty sights and a number of deer along the way.
We got back to the campsite just in time for the Opera San Jose singer showcase. Pre-Covid, this was always an in-person event. This year, it was a virtual event. Lucky for us, we have decent cell service so we got to enjoy listening to the arias through our RV speakers.
Our site backs up against the lake but with too many trees in the way. Luckily, there are plenty of opportunities along the shoreline to enjoy the sunset.
