Day 52, So Far and Yet So Near

Princeton has its fair share of breakfast bakeries. Today we went to Lillipies. While we enjoyed the selection of pastries, we all agreed that yesterday's The Gingered  Peach was a step above. One thing Lillipies has is house made English muffins, and not just the plain ones. The varieties sounded like the variety one finds in a bagel shop. Uncharacteristically, we stuck with buying two plain for tomorrow's breakfast.

We headed out and mostly down Rte. 1 towards our next stop.  In Pennsylvania, we rolled past Philadelphia, Chadds Ford (home of the Brandywine Museum which is mostly dedicated to Wyeth) and Longwood Gardens. I was grateful that our friends, Bill and Susan, had lived in the area and that we'd taken the opportunity to visit. There is so much to see and do here.

Much of this area is rolling hills with large estates, stables, and suburban communities that house people who work in Philadelphia and maybe even New York City. Some live in close proximity to Amish communities. As I remembered a bike ride many years ago where I got such behind a horse and buggy (not a pleasant experience), Denis spotted this one.

While some of Rte1 is green and lovely, other parts are more industrial and gritty. We passed a hydroelectric dam on the Susquehanna River. It is one of the largest non-federal hydroelectric plants in the US.

We are in Patasco Park tonight. Our plan was to host friends who visited us on one of their cross country trips at our site. We'd enjoyed doing that in Darien Lakes Campground. Unfortunately, I was no sooner out of the car that I got three bug bites. Instead, we got to visit them at their home, not ten minutes away. While this park makes it seem like you are a long way from civilization, we can actually see the lights of homes in the development right behind our campsite. I wonder if they ever get tired of the smell of people's campfires.
