Day 45, Family, Near and Far
Over the past few years, so many of us have been separated from family and friends. I am so thankful we have been able to see friends and family members on this trip. Today was one of those days.
We traveled into Boston to visit with Denis's nephew, Ty, for brunch. Ty is a student at Emerson, which is right across from the Boston Common. It was really nice to visit with him and to spend time hearing about him, something that doesn't seem to happen in larger family settings.
We met at Tatte, a kind of cross between Tartine and Bar Tartine (for our Bay area friends). The pastries are delicious and the brunch dishes yummy. We'd recommend it to anyone visiting Boston.
Tourists have returned to Boston, which means the streets were fairly crowded. We've been to Boston a number of times and the combination of Covid concerns and the threatening rain, led us to only walk through the Common after brunch before heading back to my brother's. We did stop by "Make Way for Ducklings" and the Swan Boats, both tourist attractions.
There is so much history in Boston that anyone who visits should walk the Freedom Trail and be reminded of the beginnings of our country. Then, reward yourself with a cannoli from any one of a number of great cannoli places in the North End. A few years ago, we did just that. We ate our way through at least four cannoli bakeries. We don't remember which one we thought was best but we sure had fun.
We got to spend time with Colleen and Olivia on video chat. We are so lucky technology helps us feel not as far away as we are.
Later in the evening, we spent time with my nephew, Andrew's, family. It was great to see his daughter who is three. I haven't seen her in two years. Children change so much in that time.
Another reminder to cherish every opportunity to spend with family.
