Day 42, Despite Ida
After having pretty good weather for our trip, Ida had something to say. It was hard to sleep with the pounding of the rain one the roof, which was replaced by winds throughout the night. We were comforted by the fact that we weren't in a tent and that the trailer stayed warm and dry.
This turned into a two hour hike. But that hardly tells the story of picking our way through mud and rocks and through a creek bed for much of the hike. We wondered how much the 3 inches of rain we were hiking through.
Our good hiking shoes kept our feet dry and, for the most part, me from slipping. More than halfway through, there was some rock scrambling. Anyone who has been hiking with me knows that this freaked me out but Denis was helpful and I made it up.
There was a beautiful view of the valley that almost made all the effort worth it๐ I don't think this picture quite captures it.
After rewarding ourselves with lunch in town, we drove one of the scenic byways trails, seeing more beautiful views, waterfalls, and cute towns. Catskill was particularly amusing with all the cats that lined the streets.
Our second hike was along the rail trail. It made me realize that rail trail doesn't mean bikeable Even though it's flat, many railroad ties are on the trail requiring the hiker to pay close attention.
Denis hadn't gotten the view of the Hudson River he'd been hoping to get so, one more hike, up to the Mountain View House site. This is the site of one of the first Catskill resorts. It feel into disrepair and was finally taken down in 1963. It's said that on a clear day, you can see four states. While it was fairly clear, we don't know how to identify the four states. We agreed we didn't have to to enjoy the view.
The Catskills are beautiful. We can certainly understand the attraction to families who come year after year. Now if we'd only found Mrs. Maisel.
