Day 40, Falling Water

We made the mistake of running out of coffee. Denis decided a morning hike into town would be nice. It would give us the opportunity to walk part of yesterday's trail again and to enjoy the waterfalls. Nearly five miles later, we were back at the campsite and it was finally time for breakfast/lunch.
As I wrote yesterday, Watkins Glen hosts an annual Grand Prix race. They celebrate it with these crosswalks around the town.

The Finger Lakes region is known for their Riesling and other whites. With all the wineries, it took us some time of internet research to find the one or two we wanted to visit. Both required reservations, neither had availability today.

Not be be deterred, we went to the one we most wanted to visit based on reviews of their wine. We arrived to a "Tasting by Reservation Only" sign but went in on the off chance there had been a cancellation. We were told they could accommodate us if we came back in 30 min., so we did. Their tastings are not free. There are 2.5 oz pours that range from $3-5. I guess that's one way to make sure only people who know something about their wine are interested in drinking there. Hermann J Weimer doesn't have a fancy tasting room, grounds, or view, but it did have Riesling we were happy to drink.

We drove the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, which circles the lake, hoping to get spectacular views. Much of the lakefront land is privately owned. Nice for the owners, many who have boat launches either behind their house or across the road, but disappointing for us. Here is one of the few spots we could see the lake.

The one bright spot was Hector Falls, another photo worthy falls, so characteristic of this area.
