Day 36, "Boost Buffalo, it's Good For You"*

We spent the afternoon with my brother touring a part of downtown Buffalo about two miles from where we grew up. It once was the terminus of the Erie Canal but was pretty desolate when we were growing up. A few years back, the city decided to invest in its waterfront and Canalside began to take share.

In London, we'd see remnants of Roman walls. In Buffalo, there are remnants of the original Erie Canal.

Over the years I've returned, I've watched the area become revitalized. Now, instead of simply landing at the airport and rushing to see Niagara Falls, the restaurants, breweries, and the Buffalo Naval and Military Park along with sports arenas give tourists a reason to linger.

There are other attractions as well. The largest outdoor roller rink in New York State (inline skates not allowed) which is flooded in the winter to become an ice skating rink. There weren't many people today but we were told this is popular on weekends.
The Buffalo area has a proud manufacturing history. In fact, Cheerios are still made here and if you visit on the right day, the air has that delicious Cheerios in milk smell.

Another of the things manufactured in Buffalo at one time were carousels. A few years back, the city acquired an intact carousel that had been in storage for over 60 years. All pieces have been lovingly restored, the Wurlitzer organ has been refurbished, and it is now 100% powered by Tesla solar panels manufactured in Buffalo.
There was an art piece I thought belonged at the home of the San Jose Sharks rather than the Buffalo Sabres.

Our afternoon ended with a visit to my favorite Buffalo ice cream, Lake Effect. Their Black Sesame ice cream did not disappoint, though Denis very much preferred his coconut and Pina colada combo, while George enjoyed a regional favorite flavor, loganberry.

George and his family joined us at the campground for a cookout, complete with s'mores and a campfire, the first one we had on our trip. Such a nice easy way to end the day and peaceful place to sit as I finish this blog.
