Day 31, Sunday in the Park with Art
Columbus is the capital of Ohio and the 28th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Denis had spent time here when he worked with people from OCLC on the international standards committee so he was looking forward to spending the day touring.
We started off at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanic Gardens. It was delightful. There are a few topiaries scattered throughout the park and the conservatory houses exotic plants from all over the world. My favorite parts of the park were the Children's Garden and the Garden Railway.
There were a lot of families taking advantage of the play areas in the Children's Garden. There was so much to explore.
We enjoyed the model trains and the creativity in all the scenery. There seems to be a pretty active model train community. There is an upcoming backyard tour of 20 installations in and around Columbus.
Our outdoor art adventure still had two more stops. Schillar Park is located in the German Village. It is the oldest park in the city and it sprinkled with delightful and amusing sculptures. You have to keep your eyes open since many are overhead and some are obsured by the trees.
One more whimsical art installation was one our list, Field of Corn. It is built on farmland donated to the city of Dublin by the man who developed the first hybrid corn in that field. It is now surrounded by modern office buildings. There are over 100 6-foot tall ears of corn. It is said to represent three of the varieties he developed. I didn't take the time to figure out the differences.
Of course, we couldn't go to the German Village without stoppings to sample the hearty and delicious food and, of course, the beer.
Prost!

A fascinating place to visit!
ReplyDeleteFar more interesting than I was expecting. Delightful day.
DeleteSteve grew up outside of Columbus! He said Dublin was a small corn field town when he was there as a child. Glad you spent some time in Ohio!
ReplyDeleteWe really enjoyed all the art and wished we'd had more time to go to the museum. So happy Denis put this stop on the list.
