Day 26, Three Meals, Three States
We started off the day in South Dakota. One of the Hwy 90 roadside attractions is the statue, Dignity. Dignity honors the Lakota and Dakota people and their strong connection to the Earth and Sky.
Another roadside attraction is Porter Sculpture Park. It looked like it might have been a fun stop. Unfortunately, the exit was closed and the next exit was miles down the road. Maybe, another time. I found out it's a Harvest Host
As we drove, we passed the exit that goes to The Little House on the Prairie home of Laura Ingalls Wilder. While I remember reading all the books to/with Colleen when she was young, we didn't stop. Partly, we didn't want to take the time and partly because a friend said they'd went out of their way to go there and didn't find it compelling. I took this picture from the car as we passed the exit. It certainly portrays the farm and lands from the books.
The prairies are pretty flat and much of it is planted with corn. Each year, an area the size of Montana is planted with corn. Yet, only one percent of corn grown is sweet corn. The largest percentage goes to cattle feed and ethanol production.
Some of it goes to decorate the world's only Corn Palace. The murals are designed by local students each year and are then created out of different colored corn. It is Mitchell, SD's big tourist attraction.
We stopped at Falls Park in Sioux City, Iowa for our picnic lunch.
Tonight we are at Scenic Campground in South Sioux City, Nebraska. That's three states in one day! The campground is operated by the city. While there are a few long term residents here, our site faces the Missouri River giving us another sunset, riverside dinner.
One our fellow campers (also R-podders) told Denis Jackson Street Brewing was a great microbrewery. Since we have only one night here, we headed to the other side of the river. That gave us a chance to drive around South Sioux City and enjoy some of the street art installations along with a brew.
